The City's Ordinance regarding snow and ice removal has been modified as follows:
13-1A13. SNOW AND ICE TO BE REMOVED
It is hereby made the duty of the owner and/or the occupant of any lots abutting upon any sidewalks to cause all snow and ice to be removed from such sidewalks within forty-eight (48) hours after the end of a snow or ice event. If ice has accumulated of such character as to make removal thereof impossible, the sprinkling or placement of sand, ash or other noncorrosive material thereon within the time specified for removal in such a manner as to make such sidewalk safe for travel of pedestrians shall be deemed in compliance with the provisions of this Chapter.
SIDEWALK MAINTENANCE
By City Ordinance sidewalks are the maintenance responsibility of the abutting property owner. This is for any sidewalk along the front or rear of the property.
The City does try and assist single family property owners but the City is obligated to maintain those sidewalk abutting property owned by the City.
The City has a set priority for sidewalk maintenance:
1st Priority are for those sidewalks abutting City Property and Park Land.
2nd Priority are those sections of sidewalks that have settled next to a storm drainage structure.
3rd Priority are sidewalk offsets at single family properties where the offset or settlement is a minimum of an 1-½ inch or more. These request are addressed as funding and work schedules allow. There is no specific budget for sidewalk repairs.
If you have or know of a section of sidewalk that could meet the 3rd priority, contact Joe Johnson, Director of Public Works, at: joej@leawood.org
